3G Turndown FAQs

What is the 3G turndown?

Technology is constantly evolving and new and improved products are created to replace previous versions. Just like the entertainment industry evolved from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray to 4K streaming, the telecommunication space has transitioned from 2G to 3G to 4G to 5G. In order to free up resources for 5G services, telecommunication providers are turning down their 3G networks. This means that any device, including hardware found within certain Audi vehicles and other manufactures’ vehicles, operating on a 3G network will no longer have an active connection and will be unable to transmit or receive data.

Why is this happening?

This is known as technological obsolescence. Occasionally, industry advancements result in older products becoming incompatible with new technology. With a majority of connected devices now utilizing the 4G network, telecommunication providers are moving away from 3G in order to use that bandwidth to support their 5G network rollouts.
